Japanese design first started to make an impact on the fashion industry back in 1982 when 12 Japanese designers started to show their collections at the ready to wear runway shows. Today, many of the names are easily recognized such as Hanae Mori, Yamamoto, Comeme des Garcons, and Kenzo. However, the impact of their movement to bring Japanese style to the West has changed the way that contemporary fashion looks today.
In particular, certain elements of Japanese fashion made a large impact that is still noticeable today such as the use of monochrome tones, crazy shapes, and the use of black as a colour. Today however, it is the street fashion designs of the Japanese that are still making waves in the fashion industry given the fact that Japanese youngsters are still extremely fashion consciousness and experimental. Of note in contemporary fashion is the way that Japanese designers are not afraid of contrasting completely opposite colours for a look that is unique and still quite eye catching.
Colour is not the only thing that the Japanese have taught the fashion industry can be contrasted however, as fabrics, patterns, and different styles are often mixed and merged at will creating looks that in theory should be hard on the eyes, but in reality are quite inspiring and more than a little breathtaking. The use of embroidery and other close detailed work only adds to the allure creating fashion that is hard to replicate and hard to ignore.
